Very special little cardigan for my new grandchild

Very special little cardigan for my new grandchild. Found some wonderful mother-of-bearl buttons at my favourite shop in Berlin -‚Knopf und Schnalle‘. It’s a tiny shop, lined with shelves, full of boxes with the most amazing buttons. The lining is from my stash and the wool is the best: When visiting @thingborgwoolshop, looking for some special wool, it was brought from the backroom. It’s handsorted from a flock of Icelandic sheep and spun @uppspuni_minimill and sooo wooly-soft. The pattern is ‚Dagmal’, from Istex Lopi Book 44.

It‘s so clever how she incorporated the cable into the opening for the thumb.The wool is a classic Rowan Tweed, I found in my goodie-bag, @munich_knits. As the Riddari pattern in the children‘s version calls for Fjällalopi I had to adept the pattern, because I wanted to knit it with Lettlopi. It worked out fine and I‘m very happy with the result.

Little Tsutsu wears a sweater in traditional Icelandic Lopapeysa-style. There are actually guidelines about the features of a real Icelandic sweater. I‘ve been talking to women from the Icelandic Handknitting Association and they told me all about it. So Tsutsu‘s sweater wouldn’t pass their criteria, because it‘s knitted with the very thin Icelandic Einband…. But I think some variation is always nice.

I did it! I started to learn how to spin. My wonderful teacher Jóhanna @textilmidstod has a lot of patience. And it‘s so interesting to actually feel how the fibers of different sheep breeds react, during the process of spinning. So far I have tried Icelandic sheep and Wensleydale. Also my friend and accomplished weaver @suebmal uses the thread, which I find absolutely thrilling.
